In This Issue: Latin American environmentalism, Earth Day, articles and events.
Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has offered an annual opportunity to take stock of global environmental trends. After a year marked by record-breaking wildfires, hurricanes, deforestation, and drought, we are called to reflect upon not only the sobering realities of climate change, but also the promise of an environmentalist awakening gaining momentum across the globe.
This awakening has become increasingly apparent in Latin America. The call for systemic change to both improve quality of life and mitigate environmental disaster has amplified across the region, with organizations calling attention to deepening ties between social inequity and exploitative industry. To begin, 199 Brazilian organizations signed a letter to the American Government warning that any closed-door negotiation with President Jair Bolsonaro that excludes Brazilian civil society and Indigenous Peoples could put the Brazilian environment, human rights, and democracy at risk. Talks between President Biden and Bolsonaro’s administrations have been ongoing; whether or not new environmental agreements are brokered remains to be seen, particularly as Bolsonaro continues to demand compensation to preserve the Amazon.
The movement against mining in Ecuador has climaxed in a national vote, with over 80 percent of voters supporting a ban on large-scale mining in watershed areas. Though mining has long been proffered by the country’s conservative party as vital to the improvement of living conditions and economic development, members of mining communities are pushing back against poor work environments and pollution. Further south, one hundred organizations have signed an open letter to Argentine President Alberto Fernández and other officials to stop illegal mining and free 12 activists detained in the city of Andalgalá.
Finally, the Leaders Summit On Climate, a virtual summit hosted by the White House, ended this morning. Topics ranged from raising climate ambitions to climate security and resilience, and included representatives from 7 Latin American countries. Though the impact of this summit is not yet clear, a number of ambitious goals have been set, reinvigorating some faith in coordinated international climate action.
Happy Reading,
